Okay, I’m not ashamed to admit it doesn’t take much to make me blubber. Anytime we’re watching a sad movie, TV show, or commercial with sentimental music, my kids will turn to stare at me, and if I let out the tiniest sniffle there will be a chorus of “Are you CRYING?” Kinda ruins the moment.
But yes. I even got a little choked up while looking up the videos to these Top Three Scenes That Made Me Bawl.

#1. The song Uncle Iroh sings in Avatar: The Last Airbender. (Yes, I’m an Avatar geek.) Avatar is full of scenes that make me go wah, but this one is the most memorable. I’ve seen this episode at least four times but it never fails–just when Iroh chokes up, my waterworks turn on. Time to pretend I got a cat hair in my eye, or the kids will start to point and laugh. Totally not fair, it’s a sneak attack because the rest of the episode is silly and hilarious, and then WHAM, this little scene ambushes you out of nowhere.
Honorable mention (and only because it’s not out on DVD yet, or I’d totally be posting that video too): Snape’s memory montage scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pt. 2. Snape’s death scene didn’t actually get me even though it was very tragic and horrible and well acted–probably because of all the girls who’ve been romanticizing him ever since the first movie, even though in the books Professor Snape is supposed to be gross and greasy, and definitely not a sexy, conflicted soul with amazing hair–I digress. Anyway, those girls screamed and squealed and ruined the scene for me. (Cursing annoying kids in a movie theater with a plastic wand doesn’t work, by the way). But the scenes in the pensieve, when Snape found Lily’s body and was, himself, sobbing. Oh my dear goodness. Kleenex time.
When I’m drawn into a great emotional scene in a book, it’s just as easy to lose it and cry as I would during any sad scene in a movie. Fred Weasley’s death scene in the book–I think I actually felt physical pain at that one. I was still reeling from his death when I got to the part where Harry sees Lupin and Tonks’ bodies in the Great Hall, and I don’t know why I didn’t just put the book down for the night. I was torturing myself.
Several other books have made me cry throughout the years–some I read in my early teens, yet I still remember the scenes that affected me: Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern; The Masterharper of Pern; Heart’s Blood; The Once and Future King; Flowers in the Attic; The Sleep of Stone; Bones of Faerie; The Hunger Games. And many others, I’m sure, that I’m not remembering.
What books or movies have made you lose it? Have you written any sad scenes in your own work that have either brought a tear to your eye, or hopefully tears from your readers’ eyes?
Fairies and Pirates 
I cry so easily it's embarrassing. I finally finished my first MS a while ago and I even cried whilst writing a letter that my MC's Father, who was dead, had left for him. The problem is, I cry so easily that I don't know if was an emotional scene, or just me being me 🙂
I'm glad I'm not the only cry baby out there. I cried in Harry Potter when Dumbledore died. I cried when I saw Armageddon. The part where Bruce Willis says “Grace, I'm not gonna be able to keep my promise…” Oh, and I also cried at the series montage of Seinfeld when they played the Green Day song Good Riddance. Not proud of it, but there it is.
Sarah – Oh I know, I have two emotional scenes in my two mss, and same as you I don't know if I'm just being overly emotional or what, but especially the first one makes me teary-eyed. But I don't know if it's good or melodramatic.
Missi – I cried in Armageddon too! Bawled.
Just changed my last video, because what I had was silly, and how could I forget Doctor Who?!
That scene in Doctor Who makes me cry as well. Also, I once dated a guy who was pretty hot, and could pass for Snape, only sexier.
I am a total crybaby too! I have to try and hide it from my husband and kids. Its ridiculous. Don't even get me started on Harry Potter with the Snape thing and the Weasley death. OUCH! Other movies that made me cry… Stepmom, Of Mice & Men & Braveheart to name a few.
I had to add The Hunger Games to the list because that stupid book made me lose it today. *sniffle*
You just scored serious points with me, giving the #1 spot to Uncle Iroh's song. Not only because it was a touching scene, but it was in memory of Mako, the original voice of Iroh, who had passed away. Gives me chills every time.

I have a few other posts planned involving Avatar, because I'm way too fanatic about what a great story it is! My oldest never got used to the new voice actor after Mako died. Iroh's such a rich character, I just loved him.
Okay, after reading all these comments I feel like a hard as stone woman. I rarely cry! Hmmm. Don't know what's wrong with me. Maybe it's because I have three daughters and I just can't add any more waterworks to our household.
But, even though I don't cry, I am often REALLY touched or moved by a book or movie. And I love it when people tell me my book made them cry.
Ooh, I thought of something that might redeem me. When I'm pregnant (which happens fairly often around here) I DO cry. Even at songs on the radio!
And by the way, My husband (Boat Launch Elitist) read your comment about the Civic and was cracking up!
Um… Pretty much everything makes me emotional. TV commercials, telling my kids a story about someone doing something cool, seeing them just standing there looking bigger than the last time, emotional scenes in books or movies… it ALL gets me.
Maggie – Oh, I hear ya, I'd cry even more when I was pregnant, which was also quite often! LOL Anything would set me off. Haha, I'm glad your husband liked my boat story! It was just crazy.
Peggy – You should have seen me during the weeks before and after my oldest's high school graduation. I'd just randomly burst into tears. I'm glad she's still living at home for now, otherwise I'd be an even worse wreck!
